The challenges the industry is now encountering are multiple : to infuse local culture into traditional crafts , to add modern touch , to have impact on people ' s daily humdrums as well as to educate them about aesthetic sentiment in life . For years , the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute has published books to promote local crafts , which aims to discover different stories and experiences of artists , skills , historic trajectories , local attributes and well-made craft pieces . By means of introducing particular cases of different crafts and artists , we hope to encourage people to see our island as a craft-productive place . Commonly-seen yet easily-ignored , these craft pieces have definitely left their marks in our lives and in the history of “ hand-made economy . ” Co-published with Yuan Liou Publishing Co . , this series Relativity Theory of Crafts consists of two books : Life Utensils and Hand-Tailored Clothes . Responding to a Japanese master , Soetsu ' s philosophy of crafts , which goes “ Beauty lays in pieces used in life , ” they work as excellent access for readers to see crafts from users ' eyes , leading them to spots where and how they were made and who made them . Reporters of each article are guides taking readers on a tour filled with beauty and glamour : readers may not only learn wonderful crafts from experts , artisans and artists , but also develop their own taste of life . In Life Utensils , for instance , Hsieh Chi-chang ( 解致璋 ) , a tea expert , showed versatility of some of the Hsiao-Fang Pottery Arts ' wares in tea parties , followed by an interview with the artist , Tsai Hsiao-fang ( 蔡曉芳 ) . In the interview , while the porcelain artist was unfolding a 40-year journey of his struggling to represent the precious Chinese antique Jun wares , the reporter was overwhelmed by an euphoria aroused by rows of sophisticated tea bowls surrounding her – “ happier than an emperor , ” as she put it . In Hand-Tailored Clothes , one of the articles began with an architecture designing scholar , An Yu-chien ' s ( 安郁茜 ) demonstration of the uniqueness and prominence of designer Sophie Hong ' s ( 洪麗芬 ) work made of hong silk . It then went ' down-to - earth ' when Ms . An started modeling how to wear these clothes on a daily basis . The next stop was Sophie Hong ' s studio where the worldly-known fashion is brought about . Ms . Hong shared the story of how she managed to apply traditional silk fabric on cotton and lace , furthermore , to create a fusion of eastern silhouettes and western tailoring skills . That ' s why the brand , Sophie Hong , gets to glow on international catwalks . The series include 16 categories of craft , over 30 interviews with noted artists , covering discourse of experts and artists , dialogues between designers and artisans and also between different generations . Hopefully , the duet of life and crafts slow modern people down and help us to live our lives more gracefully . A single teacup or a silk scarf may be the start for us to appreciate the crafts born right here and to further support the whole industry behind them . We believe , by doing so , the craft industry in Taiwan will have strength to pursue more visibility and win our own aesthetic signature in the world .
