To contribute to the “ Four Modernizations ”:2. To serve as a channel for the ecumenical sharing of resources ; 3. To make Christian presence and participation more widely known to the Chinese people .

These three goals were designed to appeal to different Amity constituencies and to spell out __UNDEF__ the general purpose of the foundation and its programs . On January 1,1987 , Amity clarified its understand ing of relationships with overseas organization __UNDEF__ , stating that ( 1) They should be in general sympathy with China ’ s socialist modernization __UNDEF__ ; ( 2) they should be willing to abide by the laws and customs of the People ’ s Republic of China and operate in an open and aboveboard manner ; and ( 3) They should respect the three-self principle of the Chinese churches . The document went on to stress that Amity was a “ new form of Christian involvement in Chinese society ,” insofar as it was a Chinese initiative a nd because it emphasized co-operation between Christians and non-Christians .19 This document was intended to clarify the service and development approach __UNDEF__ of Amity , as well as its nature as a Chinese initiative , for overseas organizations and sponsoring agencies . The idea for Amity had come from both Ting and Han . Ting had the vision and the reputation in China and overseas ; Han was able to develop the connections and get things done . As Overseas Coordinator , I became very much involved in Amity pr ograms and relationships during its early years __UNDEF__ , and worked closely with Han and Ting for the next twelve years .

For this reason , my narrative here will have a different tone than in many academic papers.20 The full story of Amity ’ s early history is beyond the scope __UNDEF__ of this paper , and so I will only touch on a few important points . It was K . H . Ting himself who came up with the Chinese name for Amity , the two characters meaning love ( ) and virtue or moral power ( ) . He had briefly considered th e name Enlai ( 恩來 ) , which could be translated as “ the grace which comes , ” and which also recalled the memory of Zhou Enlai , but he rejected it because he knew there would be opposition in China and inevitable misunderstandings overseas . The characters 愛德 convey the sense __UNDEF__ of love and the power of love , as they do in Arthur Waley ’ s translation of the __UNDEF__ 道德經 which was entitled The Way and Its __UNDEF__ Power.21 and also express Ting ’ s sense of love as God ’ s primary attribute and the dimension of Christian __UNDEF__ practice in society .

The translation “ Amity ” was suggested by Janice Wickeri (魏貞愷 ) in late 1984 and this became the official English name . Ting received encouragement for the idea of Amity from friends in the CPPCC and in the government in Jiangsu and Beijing , but questions about the new foundation were coming from other quarters in China . I have no record __UNDEF__ of these conversations and meetings , but I was informed of them in conversations and meetings with Bishop Ting . Objections centered on the poss ible involvement of overseas churches in China , and whether Amity would inadvertently subvert the Three-Self principle . In Beijing , Ting discussed Amity with senior officials from the Religious Affairs Bureau and the United Front Work Department ( UFWD ) who approved __UNDEF__ of the idea , but continued to raise questions throughout the 1980s . At one point in 1986 , Xi Zhongxun ( 習仲勳 ) , a veteran revolutionary and CPC Central Committee member who was then concerned with religious and cultural affairs ( and father of the present Chinese leader 習近平 ) , asked to see Ting about a proposed conference on international ecumenical sharing which was then in the planning stages . Xi wanted Ting ’ s “ clarification ” on Amity ’ s position on project funding and his assurance that the conference was not a fundraising event for the church.22 In the 1980s and 1990 s , there was no conflict or competition between the Amity Foundation and the Church , as their leadership overlapped . Start up funding for Amity came from the two nat ional church bodies ( ) in Shanghai . At the local level , church personnel or members often assisted in Amity programs . Amity was , in a sense , more like a Western European development agency , rather than a mission
